German Shepherd Health Risks
Hip Dysplasia
The most common inherited condition in GSDs. The hip joint doesn't fit properly, causing arthritis, pain, and lameness. Severe cases need total hip replacement surgery — $5,000-8,000 per hip. About 19% of German Shepherds are affected. Even mild cases require lifelong joint supplements and anti-inflammatories.
Elbow Dysplasia
Similar to hip dysplasia but in the elbow joint. Surgery costs $3,000-5,000. Often develops alongside hip dysplasia — a "double whammy" that pushes annual vet costs well past $10K in a bad year. Elbow dysplasia is the kind of condition that makes annual limit caps dangerous.
Degenerative Myelopathy

Bloat / GDV (Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus)
Deep-chested breeds like GSDs are prone to gastric dilatation-volvulus — the stomach twists on itself, cutting off blood flow. This is a medical emergency. Surgery costs $3,000-6,000. Without immediate treatment, it is fatal. Insurance that covers emergency surgery is non-negotiable for GSD owners.
