Pet Insurance for Labradors

Last updated: June 11, 2026

Labradors are Australia's most popular dog breed for good reason. They are friendly, easy to train, and great with kids. They are also prone to a handful of expensive health problems. Insurance for a Lab will run you $35-60/month depending on age and provider.

The Big 3: Lab Health Risks

Hip and Elbow Dysplasia

Labs are one of the breeds most affected by hip dysplasia. Surgery runs $4,000-8,000 per hip. Bilateral (both hips) can hit $12,000+. This is the main reason to insure a Lab. Make sure your policy does not have a sub-limit on orthopaedic claims.

Cruciate Ligament Tears

Active Labs tear their ACL equivalent. Surgery: $3,000-5,000 per knee. Some insurers impose a 6-month waiting period specifically for cruciate ligament claims. If your Lab is already limping, this counts as pre-existing.

Obesity and Related Issues

Labs will eat anything. Weight gain leads to joint stress, diabetes, and heart problems. Insurance covers the treatment. It does not cover the diet food. Keep your Lab lean and you avoid half the claims.

The Strategy for Lab Owners

Insure before age 2. Hip dysplasia is considered pre-existing once diagnosed, and symptoms often show up between ages 1-3. Bow Wow Meow and Petsy offer the best value for Labs. Trupanion is overkill for a breed where the main risks (joints, cruciate) are expensive but rarely catastrophic. A $25-30K annual limit covers a worst-case year. The key thing: pick a policy with no orthopaedic sub-limits. Some insurers cap cruciate ligament claims at $2,000-4,000 regardless of your annual limit. That defeats the purpose for a Lab.
