Trupanion Australia Review 2026
Trupanion is the premium option. Unlimited annual cover, 90% back on every claim, and they do not play games with sub-limits. It costs more. The question is whether it is worth the extra.
Premiums from $45/month for dogs, no annual limit, 90% reimbursement, dental included. Underwritten by Trupanion Australia. Last updated: June 2026.
The Short Version
If your dog is a breed with known expensive health problems, French Bulldog, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, Trupanion's unlimited cover is the only policy that will not run out when you actually need it. A single spinal surgery can hit $12,000. Cancer treatment can run $15,000+. Most policies cap at $25,000-$30,000 per year. Trupanion does not cap. That one fact outweighs every other comparison for high-risk breeds. The trade-off: you pay 50-100% more per month than budget options. For a healthy mixed breed with low risk, you are probably over-insuring.
What I Like
- No annual limit. This is the big one.
- 90% reimbursement on every claim
- Dental illness covered as standard
- Accepts dogs up to 14 years old
- No sub-limits on specific conditions
- Direct vet payment available at some clinics
What Could Be Better
- Expensive. $45/month is the starting point.
- No routine care add-on option
- Brachycephalic breeds get hit with big surcharges
- 30-day illness waiting period (industry standard, but still)

The Unlimited Cover Math
Let me put numbers to this. Say your Golden Retriever gets cancer at age 7. Treatment: $12,000. With RSPCA ($25K cap), you claim $9,600 after 80% reimbursement. With Trupanion, you claim $10,800 after 90%. The $1,200 gap covers about 7 years of Trupanion's premium difference.
Now say complications push treatment to $28,000. RSPCA caps at $25,000 — you get $20,000 and eat $8,000 yourself. Trupanion pays $25,200 (90% of $28K). You are $5,200 ahead. The unlimited cap is not about typical years. It is about the one catastrophic year.
Who Should Get Trupanion
Frenchies, Goldens, German Shepherds, Pugs, Dachshunds. These breeds have known conditions that can exceed $25K in treatment.
Trupanion accepts dogs up to 14. Most insurers cut off at 8-9. If you missed the early-insure window, this might be your only comprehensive option.
Some people pay extra for peace of mind. If you would lie awake wondering whether your policy limit is enough, just get Trupanion.
If you have a 3-year-old mixed breed with no known issues, you are paying a premium for protection you probably will not need. Budget Direct or RSPCA makes more sense.
My Take
I own a French Bulldog. I went with Trupanion. Not because I enjoy paying $110/month, but because I have seen the vet bills this breed can generate. The breeder warned me. The vet warned me. Everyone who owns a Frenchie has a story about a $8,000 emergency. Unlimited cover is not a luxury for brachycephalic breeds. It is insurance against the one bad year that would otherwise wipe out your savings. If I had a Cavoodle or a mutt, I would probably go with RSPCA and pocket the difference.
