Rottweiler Health Risks
Osteosarcoma (Bone Cancer)
Rottweilers have one of the highest incidence rates of osteosarcoma — aggressive bone cancer that typically affects the leg bones. Treatment involves amputation ($3,000-5,000) followed by chemotherapy ($3,000-7,000). Even with treatment, most dogs survive 6-12 months. This is the condition that makes unlimited cover non-negotiable. A single osteosarcoma diagnosis can cost $12,000+.
Hip & Elbow Dysplasia
As heavy, large-breed dogs, Rottweilers are extremely prone to hip and elbow dysplasia. Hip replacement costs $5,000-8,000 per hip. Elbow surgery costs $3,000-5,000. Because Rotties carry so much weight, conservative management (joint supplements, physiotherapy) is less effective than in lighter breeds. Surgery is often the only real option.
Heart Conditions (DCM)

My Recommendation for Rottweiler Owners
Trupanion. The cancer risk alone justifies unlimited cover. A single osteosarcoma diagnosis can cost $12K+. If your Rottie also needs hip surgery and cruciate ligament repair in the same year — not unusual for the breed — you're looking at $25K+ in vet bills. No annual cap is the only safe option.
Petsy at $65/month is the budget alternative, but be aware: the $25K cap is tight for a Rottweiler's worst year. If you go Petsy, monitor your claims closely and consider switching if you approach the limit.
Insure early. Rottweilers age fast — they're seniors by 7-8 years. Most insurers won't take new policies on Rotties over 8. Get cover in place while your Rottie is a puppy and never let it lapse.
