๐ŸฅŠ HIGH-RISK BREED (CANCER)

Boxer Insurance Australia

Last updated: June 26, 2026

Boxers are the clowns of the dog world โ€” until the vet bill arrives. They have one of the highest cancer rates of any purebred dog.

Lymphoma and mast cell tumors are so common that Boxer owners should assume they'll face at least one cancer diagnosis in their dog's lifetime. Premiums run $30-75/month. The right insurance can be the difference between paying $15K+ out of pocket or being reimbursed at 90%.

Health Problems Boxer Owners Face

Cancer (Lymphoma & Mast Cell Tumors)

Cancer is the #1 killer of Boxers. Lymphoma and mast cell tumors are especially common. Treatment costs $6,000-15,000 depending on the protocol โ€” surgery, chemotherapy, radiation. Boxers have a 50%+ lifetime cancer risk. This is the reason you cannot skimp on coverage. A single cancer diagnosis with surgery + chemo can easily exceed $15K.

Heart Disease (Dilated Cardiomyopathy)

Boxers are prone to dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) and arrhythmias. Regular cardiac screening is recommended. Treatment involves lifelong medication at $3,000-6,000 for diagnosis and management. Specialist cardiologist visits add up fast. Some Boxers need pacemakers, which push costs much higher.

Hip Dysplasia

As a large breed, Boxers have significant hip dysplasia risk. Severe cases need total hip replacement at $5,000-8,000 per hip. Conservative management with physiotherapy and supplements runs $1-2K/year. Early diagnosis and insurance before symptoms is critical โ€” hip dysplasia pre-existing exclusions are common.

Hypothyroidism

An underactive thyroid is common in Boxers. Symptoms include weight gain, lethargy, and skin issues. Management is lifetime medication at $500-800/year. Easy to treat, easy to manage, but a condition that requires lifelong cover.

My Recommendation for Boxer Owners

Trupanion. Boxers need unlimited cover. A single cancer diagnosis with surgery + chemo can easily exceed $15K. The extra $30/month over Petsy is cheap insurance against a worst-case scenario.

If Trupanion is too expensive, RSPCA at $68/month with the $25K annual limit is the next best option. But know that $25K can disappear in a bad cancer + cardiac year for a Boxer.

Whatever you do, insure before any symptoms appear. Boxers are notorious for developing cancer between ages 6-10. Once a lump is found, it's too late to insure against it. Lock in coverage while your Boxer is young and healthy.
